A new policy requiring patrons to go behind curtained off partitions in the Fred Endert Municipal Pool locker rooms to undress is about safety and comfort, not discrimination, Crescent City Manager Eric Wier said.
Wier introduced the public to the pool’s new modesty policy, or “no-nude policy,” at Monday’s City Council meeting. The policy was implemented about two weeks ago, he told Redwood Voice Community News on Wednesday.
“There have been some concerns just over the course of time and as things change,” Wier told Redwood Voice. “You have a mixing of ages, especially young children with adults and strangers and you have them changing together — that’s really what is driving some of this. It’s about the comfort for all the patrons and a little bit about safety for our youth.”
In addition to the curtained-off partitions, a family locker room is also available with a shower that’s ADA accessible that has a door that can be shut, Wier said.
When asked how the new policy will be enforced, Wier said it’s like any pool rule.
“If someone is not following those rules and staff sees it or if there is a complaint, we will talk to that person and make sure they understand the rules,” he said. “If you can’t follow the pool rules, you will be asked to leave the facility. We’re hoping for compliance on this one.”
