Immigrant rights advocates are seeking information about an individual they say was apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in Brookings on Saturday.
The apprehension occurred between 9:26 and 9:31 a.m. near the corner of Redwood and Oak streets, according to a South Coast Equity Coalition volunteer and Brookings community member, who asked not to be named.
After viewing security footage at a nearby business, the volunteer said the male individual had gone into the store, purchased an item and went back to his truck when he was blocked in by a silver Dodge Durango and a black Ford Expedition. He ran up the hill to an area behind the Oak Street Healthcare Center. The South Coast Equity Coalition volunteer said she saw the individual being apprehended.
“Security camera footage shows two vehicles coming back to the parking lot and an officer jumps out, locks the customer’s truck and gets back in the vehicle and drives off,” she said, adding that the time was on the security camera footage.
The volunteer urged anyone with information about the individual’s name, date of birth and country of origin to call the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition hotline at (888) 622-1510.
“The biggest help would be if anyone could help figure out who he is,” she said. “It doesn’t seem like he’s from Brookings. No one seems to know him.”
The volunteer asked that the business the detention occurred near not be named as well due to fear of retaliation.
The South Coast Equity Coalition is a nonprofit organization that serves low-income and “institutionally underserved” populations in Curry and Coos counties.
While she couldn’t confirm the individual’s identity, the South Coast Equity Coalition volunteer said there was a Del Norte County Parks camping permit on the dashboard of his truck. The individual had been staying at Clifford Kamph Memorial Park near Smith River under the name Wilder Hernandez and had a checkout time of 10:10 a.m. Saturday checkout, according to the volunteer.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Rogue Valley Migra Watch stated that in addition to the black Ford Expedition and silver Dodge Durango, a black Nissan Pathfinder were involved in the incident that took place in Brookings. The vehicles are known ICE vehicles, according to the volunteer-led community organization that tracks, verifies and reports on ICE activity in the Rogue Valley.
The individual detained was driving a Ford F150, Rogue Valley Migra Watch stated. In addition to calling the PIRCH hotline, those with information about the detention can message @migra_watch_rv.
After viewing the security footage, the South Coast Equity Coalition volunteer said she contacted the Brookings Police Department and spoke with Officer Ray Branion.
The Brookings Police Department, after speaking with Medford Police, confirmed that there was no warrant, no police calls and no crimes that are connected with a Wilder Hernandez, the volunteer told Redwood Voice.
The South Coast Equity Coalition volunteer also said that ICE agents appeared to have been tracking a specific person — that it didn’t appear they were conducting a general operation in the Brookings area.
“I hope people can do what they can to look out for each other and not let fear overtake their lives,” she said.
