Del Norte County Public Health is bringing the community and its partners together for its 30th Annual Community Health Fair on Saturday.
K through I Streets and 3rd Street will be blocked off from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for organizations and their booths. The plaza between the Del Norte County Library and Price Mall will host kids’ activities.
According to Anna Porter, a Del Norte Public Health Office Technician, a variety of services and support will be offered at the health fair.
The health fair has been previously held in Beachfront Park. But after taking surveys from last year’s event, Del Norte Public Health found that the elderly were having difficulty navigating the park’s terrain.
“(We) found out that a lot of the reason that the elderly weren’t coming is because they can’t navigate in their wheelchairs and their walkers,” Porter said. “So by changing to the street, they can come.”
Public Health will offer free flu shots. In partnership with State Farm Agent Mary Dorman, there will also be a blood drive before the event. The bloodmobile will be parked between 3rd and I Streets and will open at 9:30 a.m. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments will be given priority.
“Our goal is to get 50 pints of blood,” Porter said. “I can donate a pint of blood in 6 minutes and 11 seconds.”
Crescent City Community Pharmacy will provide information on their prescription delivery services while offering blood pressure checks.
Del Norte Ambulance will offer CPR training for kids and adults.
The Breast & GYN Health Project will offer education on breast-related issues through tangible examples. According to Porter, attendees can feel examples of breasts that have a cyst or nodule inside them.
It will be NOAA’s first time at the health fair, as they will offer education on atmospheric rivers, according to Porter.
Sutter Health, Open Door Community Health Center, Partnership HealthPlan, Area 1 Agency on Aging, Tobacco Free Del Norte, and many more health-related organizations will also be there.
The health fair will have a “Kid-palooza” area in the plaza between the library and Price Mall, where there will be a maze manned by the Trillium Teen Center. First 5 Del Norte and the Redwoods Wonder Forge will also be providing fun and their services in the kids’ area.
WIC will offer “kid-tested” and “kid-approved” food samples. Doughlicious Costa Pizza and Casita Coffee will be the fair’s food vendors.
Cut It Like The Kings will bring the live music.
On I Street, the health fair will host a mini farmers’ market, including businesses such as Worms Nursery and Elkhorn Herbals Plant Nursery.
Through this event, Porter hopes that the community learns more about Del Norte Public Health’s many services and gets to experience downtown’s local businesses.
“You know, I think it’d be cool if people came just to see what Public Health actually does,” Porter said. “We do so much more than just shots. And [to] just come together and everybody have a good time, and have fun. And get vaccinated and donate blood and see what’s on 3rd Street! There’s so many different things that are available [and] a lot of people don’t even know that they’re there. Just getting our community together is great for us.”
