Del Norte County voters will cast a ballot for two contested local races on June 2.

Incumbents Chris Howard and Joey Borges will each face challenges to their District 3 and District 4 seats on the Board of Supervisors, County Clerk-Recorder Alissia Northrup told Redwood Voice Community News.

The deadline to submit election paperwork was 5 p.m. Friday.

Howard is seeking his fourth term, running against challenger Lupe Gutierrez. Gutierrez is vice president of the Del Norte County Democratic Central Committee.

Borges, who is currently the Board Chair, is seeking his second term in office. He faces Lisa Cundall, a participant of Del Norte Indivisible, and Margaret Sergent, who ran for the District 4 seat in 2022.

Meanwhile, Del Norte County Unified School District Trustee Michael Greer is taking another run at California State Assembly District 2, going up against current incumbent, Democrat Chris Rogers. Northrup said she will forward Greer’s paperwork to the California Secretary of State to decide if he’s qualified to run.

As for State Senate District 2, its current incumbent, Mike McGuire is termed out of office. He has thrown his hat in the ring for Congressional District 2, which had been held by Rep. Doug LaMalfa until his death on Jan. 6.

San Rafael Democrat, Assemblyman Damon Connolly announced last year that he would seek McGuire’s State Senate seat. A Novato woman, Tief Gibbs has created a website stating she is also seeking to represent California State Senate District 2.

Gibbs ran against Congressman Jared Huffman in 2024, according to Northrup.

Local offices up for election that are uncontested include the Del Norte County Superior Court Judge seat that Darrin McElfresh occupies.

Jeff Harris is running unopposed for Del Norte County superintendent of schools. Clinton Schaad is running unopposed for Del Norte County auditor-controller and Jennifer Perry looks to keep her seat as county assessor. Barbara Lopez is unopposed for Del Norte County tax collector.

Northrup said she’s also running unopposed for the county clerk-recorder position.
