A Look at the 2025 LEADN Award Ceremony

Friends, family, and other community members came together on March 13th to honor local law enforcement at the Cultural Center on Front Street. The award ceremony kicked off with the Pelican Bay Honor Guard bringing out the flags of the United States, State of California, and Yurok Tribe. Former Crescent City Mayor Blake Inscore followed up the pledge and anthem with a religious invocation.

Awards recipients included staff of the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, Crescent City Hall, Del Norte County Probation Department, Redwood National & State Parks, Pelican Bay State Prison, California Department Of Fish & Wildlife, Yurok Tribal Police, and the Del Norte County District Attorney.

EPIC Offshore Wind Panel Stirs Little Local Interest

Only about a dozen Del Norters showed up on a cold Friday evening to hear the latest science concerning offshore wind energy’s potential impact on marine wildlife. The event, held in the United Methodist Church in Crescent City and hosted by the Environmental Protection Information Center (EPIC) of Arcata, was billed as an Offshore Wind Information Panel. Featured speakers addressed the possible interaction between marine mammals, birds and turtles and the giant floating wind turbines proposed for the waters off Del Norte and Humboldt counties.

Before the presentations began, Tom Wheeler, executive director of EPIC, explained the purpose of the event to Redwood Voice. “Under the Biden administration, Del Norte county was slated to have an offshore wind lease executed in the next four years. That’s obviously in question now with the Trump administration, but it’s still important for us to have these conversations and to understand the potential benefits and costs of offshore wind. And so we’re here tonight to help the community have that conversation.”

A tidal wave of talent is surging from our very own community! The Tsunami All-Starz Junior cheerleading team, a powerhouse of 15 dedicated local youths, has achieved an extraordinary feat: they’ve earned a bid to the prestigious D-II Summit National Championship in Orlando, Florida!

Forget the pom-pom stereotypes. These young athletes are fierce competitors, spending countless hours perfecting their routines, building strength, and fostering unwavering teamwork. Their dedication has paid off, as they’ve proven themselves among the best in the nation. This isn’t just a hobby; it’s a demanding, high-energy sport that requires discipline, precision, and heart.

“We are incredibly proud of these athletes,” says Coach Coco Soule, the team’s enthusiastic coach. “They have poured their hearts and souls into this season, and their hard work has truly shone through. Earning a bid to Summit is a dream come true, and we are thrilled to represent Del Norte County on the national stage.”
