He’s Going the Extra Mile for Mental Health! – Q&A with A Walking Testimony

It’s not everyday that someone takes on a challenge for an important cause. But when they do, the world becomes inspired and is happy that it followed that person’s journey!

After years in and out of prison and addiction, Kyndal Ray Edwards (aka A Walking Testimony) was moved to change his lifestyle, and go on a journey-walking across America for mental health awareness and recovery.

This is Redwood Voice’s Monique Camarena here. While Kyndal was passing through, I got to ask him about his experiences so far, and from those experiences, what youth, specifically, could do to recover from addiction and help their mental health.

E.P.I.C. and Del Norte’s Listening Session on Poverty

Poverty in California has many facets, some institutional, some historical, but what poverty essentially is, is the lack of something, something important and vital. Poverty in Del Norte County means the lack of access. Access to affordable housing, childcare, healthcare, and healthier food options. And like the rest of California, not everyone cares about the people who are affected by this lack.

But there are others who care deeply. Here’s Redwood Voice’s Monique Camarena’s report on EPIC, a non-profit organization who aims to End Poverty In California, and what they discussed at a listening session held in Crescent City.

Big thank you to EPIC for letting us interview them, and True North Organizing Network for inviting us to the Listening Session on Poverty earlier in September!

A Celebration of Tolowa Culture on TVM-CHAA-ME’ DAY!

On June 14, 2023, local, state, and federal park organizations and the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation came together to celebrate Tvm-chaa-me’ Day, as a kick-off to the 2nd Annual CA State Parks Week! Tvm-chaa-me’ is the Tolowa name for the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park Day-use area.

For the first time in over 100 years, the people of the Tolowa Dee Ni nation were able to cook salmon traditionally at Tvm-chaa me’. They also demonstrated canoe making out of a fallen old growth redwood log. And overall, the tribe and state park staff brought home how sacred, significant, and unique this area is.

What Parents of Del Norte Need to Know About Vaccinating their Children

It’s the kids’ turn to get protected from COVID-19! In Del Norte County, all community clinics and pharmacies are able to vaccinate children from 5-11 years old.

Children can easily contract, spread, and eventually get very sick from the COVID virus, and they could suffer the long term consequences from a viral infection. Luckily, the benefits of a vaccination outweigh the risks for the majority of people.

Check out our video where we answer all the questions parents might have about vaccinating their kids! And for more information, visit https://covid19.ca.gov/ .

What Expecting Mothers of Del Norte Need to Know About COVID-19 Immunization

Expecting mothers are worried about how COVID-19 immunization will affect themselves and their growing baby during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tens of thousands of pregnant women have been immunized with no complications, and they will pass along antibodies for COVID to the infant while nursing.

Nevertheless, few pregnant women in Del Norte County are immunized against COVID-19. With our high rates of disease transmission and the fact that pregnant women get more sick when they contract the virus, immunization is urgent.

COVID-19 and How it Threatens the Homeless of Del Norte County

Homelessness SUCKS. Food insecurity, exposure to the elements, and insufficient rest all contribute to that difficult life. And because of these factors, the COVID-19 pandemic is even more threatening to people who are homeless.

Luckily, there are steps an unhoused person can take to protect themselves! Wearing a mask, using hand sanitizer, getting immunized, and safely socially isolating as much as possible are things they can do to help keep themselves safe. Del Norte county has many resources that offer help.

Masks and sanitizers are available at:

-Rural Human Services on 286 M Street

-The Department of Health and Human Services on 880 Northcrest Drive

-Community Assistance Network on 355 Standard Veneer
